In a dramatic World Cup 2026 European qualifier, the Republic of Ireland stunned Portugal 2–0 at Aviva Stadium, marking their first victory over the Iberian giants since 1996.

Tottenham striker Troy Parrott emerged as the hero, scoring both goals—his first at international level—in the 13th and 50th minutes.

The match took a historic turn when Cristiano Ronaldo, 40, was shown a straight red card in the 61st minute for elbowing Irish defender Dara O'Shea. It was Ronaldo’s first dismissal in 226 international appearances. UEFA confirmed a minimum two-match suspension, likely ruling him out of Portugal’s clash with Armenia and possibly their World Cup opener.

Parrott’s opener came from a loose ball in the box, while his second was a clinical header from a Conor Hourihane cross. Ireland’s goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu delivered a standout performance, denying Bruno Fernandes and preserving the clean sheet.

Portugal, under coach Roberto Martínez, struggled to regain momentum after Ronaldo’s ejection. “It’s a blow, but we move on – focus on Armenia,” Martínez said, as Portugal slipped to second in Group B behind Croatia.

Ireland, led by Heimir Hallgrímsson, now sits third with 12 points from six matches, reigniting hopes of World Cup qualification. “Troy was clinical – this win shows our potential,” Hallgrímsson told reporters.
